Public Comment During Board of Education Meetings
The Board of Education values community perspectives and the feedback from our parents, teachers, staff and community. During Board of Education meetings, the Board will hear up to 30 minutes of public comment on non-agenda items and up to 30 minutes of public comment on agenda-specific items. To allow for the greatest number of community members to participate, each person will be limited to three minutes of public comment.
It is strongly encouraged for community members to sign-up for public comment ahead of the meeting. Requests to speak during the public comment portion of Board Meetings can be submitted by clicking here. Additionally, sign-up sheets will also be available ahead of the meeting in the Board of Education room beginning 30 minutes before the meeting is scheduled to begin. See Board Policy BEDH and BEDH-R for additional details on public participation.
Speaking requests will be reviewed on a first-come-first-served basis; however, priority will be given to current parents, teachers, staff members, and taxpayers residing within St. Vrain Valley Schools. As the length of public comment time is limited, if more than 10 people sign up to speak about a non-agenda item or more than 10 people for an agenda-specific item, not everyone will be able to share their public comment. In these cases, community members can add their name to the public comment list for the next scheduled Board of Education meeting, or email their comments to [email protected], which will be included in the public record as part of the minutes for the meeting. Emailed comments will only be included in the meeting minutes if the person had registered to provide public comment but was unable to do so due to time limitations.
The manner of your comments must be appropriate for the business meeting of the board. Use of foul language, obscenity, or other inappropriate behavior that is disruptive of the orderly process of the board meeting may result in being escorted from the podium or removed from the meeting.
If you are speaking to a non-agenda item, you must limit your remarks to matters of public concern about the district. However, because the day-to-day operations of the district are the responsibility of the superintendent and his administration, specific complaints about the district’s operations, including instruction, discipline, personnel, administrative procedures, or curriculum should first be referred through the proper administrative channels before it is presented to the board. All complaints should be attempted to be resolved at the lowest level through proper channels in the following order:
- Teacher or Staff
- Principal or Supervisor
- Director of Administrator
- Human Resources Department
- Superintendent
- Board of Education
In addition to contacting a teacher or staff member, there are many avenues for the public to share comments and feedback with the Board of Education and district staff. This includes:
- School-specific matters should first be discussed with your school principal.
- Personnel matters about an individual should be directed to the Human Resources department at [email protected] or 303-682-7394.
- Questions for district staff can be submitted through the district’s contact form or by calling 303-776-6200
- Feedback or comments can be submitted to the Board of Education at https://www.svvsd.org/about/board-of-education/board-of-education-contact-form.
