Lyons Middle Senior Among Colorado’s Top-Performing Schools on State Performance Framework

Lyons Middle Senior High School ranked No. 2 among 120 Colorado middle/senior high schools on the Colorado Department of Education’s School Performance Framework, which measures academic achievement, student growth, and postsecondary readiness.

The ranking reflects the school’s commitment to high expectations and strong relationships that help students feel supported and engaged in their learning.

“I attribute Lyons’ high performance rankings to our outstanding teachers and staff and the community of students we serve with strong goals,” said Principal Chris Frank. “Our students strive for academic excellence each and every day, and our teachers do amazing work at supporting each one of them.”

The school’s close-knit community encourages students to take academic risks and explore new ideas. Annamarie Strzyz, a Language Arts teacher, said educators challenge students to think creatively while providing the support they need to succeed. “Students get to feel more comfortable taking risks, which makes them braver, more innovative thinkers.”

Individual attention also helps students navigate challenges. Teachers build relationships with students, making it easier to recognize when they need additional support. “Being a small school, kids tend to not really slip through the cracks,” said Math and Science teacher, Pat Bacalis. “With the dedication of the staff and the high expectations they have, kids get a lot of individual attention.”

That support extends beyond the classroom. Teachers encourage students to pursue their interests and stay involved in school activities. Senior Wilma Spencer said teachers take an active interest in learning more about student events and regularly ask about their progress.

The ranking recognizes the efforts of Lyons students and educators to create a learning environment where students feel connected, supported, and prepared for what comes next.
