The start of a new academic year is one of my favorite times to visit our schools and talk with our students, families, teachers and staff. Our hallways are filled with a palpable optimism and drive to continue our momentum toward the highest levels of academic growth and success.

Lyza Weisman calls her "bag of tricks" everything from pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose with the eraser end of a pencil to drinking through a straw — both simple tools that help her reach just above her shoulders near the ceiling of her upward range of motion.
Reality is that the wheelchair-bound Skyline High School freshman needs help in the bathroom and in the shower due to a genetic condition — spinal muscular atrophy — that causes weakness and wasting in muscles due to a loss of specialized nerve cells.

Recent legislation has allowed school districts to offer “highly advanced gifted children” the option of early entrance to kindergarten or first grade without adhering to the state-mandated cut off ages for these two grade levels.

Week in and week out, Front Range homeschooling moms and dads from as far as Black Hawk, Thornton, Allenspark, Fort Collins, Greeley, and even Cheyenne, Wyoming, haul their kids to St. Vrain Valley Schools for the district’s APEX Homeschool Enrichment Program.

In November, voters approved St. Vrain Valley's $260.3 million bond issue by a wide margin, signifying wide community investment in public education. As one of the largest predictors of whether a student will graduate, regular attendance plays a key role in long-term student achievement. Each week of absence per semester in ninth grade lowers a student’s likelihood of graduation by 25 percent and in the early grades, only 41 percent of students who are chronically absent can read on grade level after third grade.

First-graders at Longmont's Columbine Elementary recently got a taste of coding using "drag-and-drop" programs that allowed them to problem solve and use computational thinking.
Some used the ScratchJr app on iPads, others used laptops to try programs offered through code.org. One popular program had them create stories and move people around by dragging and dropping commands.
