Dear St. Vrain Valley Community,
For many of us, the end of the calendar year provides an opportunity to reflect on the previous year – our successes, challenges and the experiences that will continue to shape our future and the people who have had an impact on our lives. For the students, teachers and staff of St. Vrain Valley Schools, 2016 will be remembered as a critical time in the further advancement of high-quality public education in our community.

In November, voters approved St. Vrain Valley's $260.3 million bond issue by a wide margin, signifying wide community investment in public education. The 2016 bond will enable St. Vrain to continue its focus on rigorous academics while allowing for anticipated enrollment growth and the further construction of safe and innovative classroom environments that foster learning and student development.

As one of the largest predictors of whether a student will graduate, regular attendance plays a key role in long-term student achievement. Each week of absence per semester in ninth grade lowers a student’s likelihood of graduation by 25 percent and in the early grades, only 41 percent of students who are chronically absent can read on grade level after third grade.

First-graders at Longmont's Columbine Elementary recently got a taste of coding using "drag-and-drop" programs that allowed them to problem solve and use computational thinking.
Some used the ScratchJr app on iPads, others used laptops to try programs offered through code.org. One popular program had them create stories and move people around by dragging and dropping commands.

In 2012, St. Vrain Valley voters passed a Mill Levy Override (MLO) that continues to advance and impact student learning across the district. Born from the 2012 MLO, the district’s nationally recognized Learning Technology Plan is putting powerful learning devices into the hands of students and teachers, enabling a higher level of collaboration and advanced, personalized learning.

Dara Ward, Energy & Sustainability Manager for St. Vrain Valley Schools, received the Environmental Education Award from the Center for ReSource Conservation (CRC) in Boulder, CO. Ward accepted the accolade from Katherine Croasdale, ReNew Our Schools Program Manager at the CRC.

St. Vrain Valley Schools’ inaugural P-TECH class has much to celebrate as their first semester comes to a close. The 50 students enrolled in Skyline High School’s Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) program – known as Falcon TECH – are an outstanding group of students committed to advanced preparation for postsecondary college and career pathways in computer information systems.

Over time, so much more than the original wallpaper and single pane skylights has changed at the State Capitol in Denver.
Old photos show dusty cowboys working on the Senate and House floors with their hats on their desks because state government then functioned under one roof and operations staff worked in the private wing offices occupied today by legislators.
