St. Vrain Valley Schools is hosting its first ever VEX Robotics Showcase from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 9. Open to the public, the event an evening of the same fun, hands-on robotics play, learning and experimentation that St. Vrain students relish day-in and day-out, in both class and extracurricular settings.

Parent-teacher conferences are looking much different these days.
Five of the district’s schools, Indian Peaks, Columbine and Northridge Elementary schools, Longs Peak Middle School and Timberline PK-8, are rolling out supportive, community-oriented “Classroom Conferences” to rave reviews, replacing those awkward one-to-one meetings.
Title 1 schools, which have 40 percent or more of their students from low-income households, receive supplementary government funding to enhance their instructional programs.

Results for ten Altona Middle School CyberPatriot teams from the January 13 state round of CyberPatriot IX, the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, were announced late last week.
Learning and competing in cybersecurity for the first time, the Altona students have continued their spectacular performance in this third round with seven teams advancing to the semi-final, or regional round, on February 4.

Longmont's Sunset Middle recently received its official International Baccalaureate, or IB, authorization following several years of work by the school to implement the program.
"This is one of the most exciting and rewarding transformations I've seen at Sunset," said Principal Dawn Macy.
She said the school started in 2012 with a feasibility study, deciding that the IB program fit well with the school's previous arts focus. Sunset also feeds into Niwot High, which offers the high school version of the IB program.

Lyza Weisman calls her "bag of tricks" everything from pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose with the eraser end of a pencil to drinking through a straw — both simple tools that help her reach just above her shoulders near the ceiling of her upward range of motion.
Reality is that the wheelchair-bound Skyline High School freshman needs help in the bathroom and in the shower due to a genetic condition — spinal muscular atrophy — that causes weakness and wasting in muscles due to a loss of specialized nerve cells.

Recent legislation has allowed school districts to offer “highly advanced gifted children” the option of early entrance to kindergarten or first grade without adhering to the state-mandated cut off ages for these two grade levels.
